The little grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis) (Kannada Name - ಗುಳುಮುಳುಕ - Gulumuluka), also known as dabchick, is a member of the grebe family of water birds. The genus name is from Ancient Greek takhus "fast" and bapto "to sink under". The specific ruficollis is from Latin rufus "red" and Modern Latin -collis, "-necked", itself derived from Latin collum "neck". Wiki

Grebes are small to medium-large freshwater diving birds. They have lobed toes and are excellent swimmers and divers. However, they have their feet placed far back on the body, making them quite ungainly on land. There are 5 species which occur in India, 1 in Karnataka and I have found 1 in Mysuru
