The grey heron (Kannada Name: ಬೂದು ಬಕ - Boodu Baka) (Ardea cinerea) is a long-legged predatory wading bird of the heron family, Ardeidae, native throughout temperate Europe and Asia and also parts of Africa. It is resident in much of its range, but some populations from the more northern parts migrate southwards in autumn. A bird of wetland areas, it can be seen around lakes, rivers, ponds, marshes and on the sea coast. Wiki

The family Ardeidae contains the bitterns, herons and egrets. Herons and egrets are medium to large wading birds with long necks and legs. Bitterns tend to be shorter necked and more wary. Members of Ardeidae fly with their necks retracted, unlike other long-necked birds such as storks, ibises and spoonbills. There are around 16 species found in Karnataka and I have found 8 in Mysuru

The purple-rumped sunbird (Kannada Name: ನೇರಳೆ ಬೆನ್ನಿನಾ ಸೂರಕ್ಕಿ - Nerale bennina Soorakki) (Leptocoma zeylonica) is a sunbirdendemic to the Indian Subcontinent. Like other sunbirds, they are small in size, feeding mainly on nectar but sometimes take insects, particularly when feeding young. They can hover for short durations but usually perch to suck nectar from flowers. They build a hanging pouch nest made up of cobwebs, lichensand plant material.[2] Males are brightly coloured but females are olive above and yellow to buff below. Males are easily distinguished from the purple sunbirdby the light coloured underside while females can be told apart by their whitish throats. Wiki

Types of sunbird species found in Mysuru:

The sunbirds and spiderhunters are very small passerine birds which feed largely on nectar, although they will also take insects, especially when feeding young. Flight is fast and direct on their short wings. Most species can take nectar by hovering like a hummingbird, but usually perch to feed. There are 131 species worldwide and 15 species which occur in India and 6 in Karnataka and I have found 2 in Mysuru

54. Ruddy-breasted crake

The ruddy-breasted crake (Porzana fusca), or ruddy crake, is a waterbird in the rail and crake family Rallidae. Its breeding habitat is swamps and similar wet areas across southAsia from the Indian subcontinent east to south China, Japan andIndonesia. It has been recorded as a vagrant from the Australianterritory of Christmas Island. This crake nests in a dry location on the ground in marsh vegetation, laying 6-9 eggs. It is mainly a permanent resident throughout its range, but some northern populations migrate further south in winter. Wiki

Rallidae is a large family of small to medium-sized birds which includes the rails, crakes, coots and gallinules. Typically they inhabit dense vegetation in damp environments near lakes, swamps or rivers. In general they are shy and secretive birds, making them difficult to observe. Most species have strong legs and long toes which are well adapted to soft uneven surfaces. They tend to have short, rounded wings and to be weak fliers. There are around 12 species found in Karnataka and I have found 2 in Mysuru

Kingfishers are medium-sized birds with large heads, long pointed bills, short legs and stubby tails. There are 93 species worldwide and 13 species which occur in India and 8 in Karnataka and I have found 4 in Mysuru.

Threskiornithidae is a family of large terrestrial and wading birds which includes the ibises and spoonbills. They have long, broad wings with 11 primary and about 20 secondary feathers. They are strong fliers and despite their size and weight, very capable soarers. There are 4 species found in Karnataka and I have found 2 in Mysuru

Most are of generally undistinguished appearance, but many have distinctive songs. There are 4 species found in Karnataka I have found 1 in Mysuru
