Grey Heron - ಬೂದು ಬಕ - Boodu Baka |
The grey heron (Kannada Name: ಬೂದು ಬಕ - Boodu Baka) (Ardea cinerea) is a long-legged predatory wading bird of the heron family, Ardeidae, native throughout temperate Europe and Asia and also parts of Africa. It is resident in much of its range, but some populations from the more northern parts migrate southwards in autumn. A bird of wetland areas, it can be seen around lakes, rivers, ponds, marshes and on the sea coast.

Types of Heron/Egrets species found in Mysuru:
The family Ardeidae contains the
bitterns,
herons and
egrets. Herons and egrets are medium to large wading birds with long necks and legs. Bitterns tend to be shorter necked and more wary. Members of Ardeidae fly with their necks retracted, unlike other long-necked birds such as storks, ibises and spoonbills. There are around 16 species found in Karnataka and I have found 8 in Mysuru
